We All Have Them...

Updated: Mar 16, 2022

Have you ever had an idea that you cannot wait to see manifested? Believe me when I tell you that we all have them. We are all creative beings; it's how we choose to listen to those ideas and move forward with them that makes the difference. It's said that we have at least 6.5 ideas per minute - what? that's a lot of ideas - from big to small we are always coming up with new ways to improve our relationships, our businesses, our health, our careers. You name it, you have an idea for it. Ideas are constantly flooding our minds - The question is, who is listening and writing them down.

So, if we're having more than 6,000 thoughts per day and we actually write one or two of them down this is where the work begins. Our endorphins are flowing, no one can stop us and we've even visualized the outcome and its success. So why do so many of us not see our creative ideas unfold?

As we move through the creative process, we must remember that ideas will not move from start immediately to success. It is not going to be a straight line. We are going to have to endure the hills and valleys of said idea and it's when we hit certain points on this journey that we will find ourselves making choices, hard choices. Many of us will decided to just drop this brilliant idea, pretty much giving up and not having any desire to push through. However, there is a small percentage of people that will see that brick wall and figure out how to climb it, break it down, push it over or maybe just create a hole to climb through it. These are the few that reach to the end, celebrate and even if this idea wasn't a great one, they are thankful for what they've learnt, and they are ready to move through the process again with the next idea on their list.

Let's talk about the majority of the people that hit that wall of frustration and turn their back on their idea. So often we say we want something so badly and then that same "we" makes sure it doesn't happen, that's self-sabotage and that's exactly what this group of creative thinkers is doing. We start to put things off, or we're afraid of criticism, we start to dwell on the mistakes, we are always waiting for that perfect timing or the perfect outcome, maybe we get off track as soon as we see progress. Bottomline is we are full of fear and the idea of moving forward is scary.

Well first we need to know that everyone experiences self-sabotage in different ways and this topic can be a deep dark hole of information. So here are just some tools to help you avoid this roadblock and help you push through that brick wall of frustration.

  • Be kind to yourself. Stop judging yourself and your hard work. Recognize that we all have shortcomings, it's not going to be perfect so create space for those imperfections.

  • Get help, we all need our allies, and the support is what truly makes the difference. People want to help, and they want to see you succeed.

  • Get clear on your values, this may not be the most important but it sure can be the most powerful tool. Remind yourself why and what a difference this idea will make for you and even the people around you.

  • Take some time away from your idea, it's surprising how much more energy comes from giving yourself a break.

Remember we all have them, so get out of your own way, focus on one thing at a time, create that to-do list and choose to do the hard thing first. You can do this! Now go make your idea a reality.
