“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:2-5
Go ahead and reread it two more times.
Let’s just focus on verses 2 & 3. “Consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”
“Consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials.”
Joy in trials. Is that possible?! Do you have a better plan on how you’ll get through the valley? No one likes to suffer, but knowing God has allowed it for our good and His glory gives us the opportunity to shift our perspective. This isn’t fake happiness (“Yay, I love having junk happen in my life“). It’s a time to grow in our walk with the Lord; that’s the fruit, that’s the joy.
Notice it doesn’t say “if” you face trials. You will continue having hard times. Sorry, but you will. But if you want to be like Jesus, you must live like Jesus and that Guy had more suffering than we’ll ever comprehend.
Anguish and joy can coexist. Think gray cloud but silver lining.
“Testing of your faith develops perseverance”
Your faith gets tested. Put your money where your mouth is. Do you truly trust and believe in the Lord? Is He a “good God” even when you are stretched thin OR is He only “good” when you get your way?
Perseverance. If you can persevere, you’re considered blessed (see James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial.”) You’re blessed because when you have “stood the test, (s)he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him (James 1:12). This is done IN God’s strength, not some kind of self pep-talk, but by constantly pursuing His help. You can do it!
Are you facing trials right now? Wish your faith didn’t need the test? Focus on the fruit: perseverance and a crown of life that you receive from The King. So worth it!
